Create 4-bits of Interactive Core Memory with this mini SAO kit!
The Core4 is controlled through and I2C interface and one or two GPIO pins that are part of the SAO standard. All of the surface mount components are assembled. You just need to weave the four cores and solder on the SAO connector. This kit is designed to enable you to dip your toe into making your own Core Memory. Naturally, it’s much easier than diving into the Core16 or Core64. It is very accessible and does not take long to complete.
I agree, Core Memory is pretty to look at… but this kit is intended to be used as INTERACTIVE Core Memory and includes a magnetic stylus kit for that purpose.
Please note that this SAO (like most) requires a brain and power to control the LEDs and Core Memory. The SAO Demo Controller is a convenient way to bring the SAO Core4 alive, and is available here. You can also power and control this SAO with any of your own SAO compatible badges. You can use any combination of microcontrollers, development boards, breadboards, jumper wires… As long as you can provide 3.3V, I2C capabilitiy, a GPIO, and some programming capability to unlock the SAO.
Demo firmware for this SAO includes a magnetic flux detector/visualizer, and a simple Game of Memory (or Simon Says, if you prefer). You can extend the demo code as far as you want by applying your creativity through your favorite programming enviroment (Arduino, C++, CircuitPython, MicroPython, Assembly Language…). More details on SAO Core4 are available on Github.
